Karen's Journey

Hello Everyone!

Hope that you all had a good week-end! Ours was spent at home, quiet for the most part. Sam did some work outside, of course Maggie helped!! Then he went to work early yesterday morning - first to Milwaukee, then a stop or 2 in Chicago on his way back, and he ended up in Davenport with a Sam's load at dinner time, so we had dinner together last night, then he was on his way again. Don't know how he does it - I sure couldn't!!

I just got home from my 3rd radiation treatment. They tatooed me today! I thought they were kidding, but first they put a drop of ink in 4 different spot, then stuck me with a needle in those spots, so they weren't kidding! It hurt! I can feel a little heat from the radiation, but that's it. I have lotion to use afterwards and they said to use Aloe too, so that's what I'm doing. No burning yet, but they said it will take a couple of weeks.

We're hoping to go up to see Sam's mom this week-end. We haven't been up there for quite a while. Stacy spent the day with her this past Friday, and Dave & Karen were with her on Sunday. She got to go out to eat both days, and she loves getting out and about, so I'm sure that she was happy.

Have a good week!

Love,
Karen

    Hi Karen,

I've been out of town at meetings lately so it took me a while to catch up. I've not forgotten you though, and have kept you in my prayers as you move through the next treatment step.

I was glad to see you are using soothing lotion for your skin. I used aloe [be sure you have a high concentration, or pure aloe to use] and had no skin damage at all, but then my radiation was on the inside so there is less effect on the skin. I also had a new type that took 10 treatments [2 per day for 5 days] so that also made a difference. But aloe is very good so use it generously, get what rest you feel you need, and your body will recover.

You have been through a lot. I can see that your family is supportive, and Sam is right there with you. You are so blessed with that, more than you know. When you are together, you can do anything.

I had to smile at your tattoo....I had plenty of markings on me, but no tattoo! However, recently I was in San Diego at a meeting, and we had a banquet on the aircraft carrier USS Midway. They had tattoo booths set up where people could get an airbrush 'tattoo' if they wanted to. I don't think I'd do a real tattoo, but this one is painted on and can be removed, so I did it. I decided on a hummingbird/flower design, and had him do it on my left side, above where my own cancer was. As he finished the painting, I told him that I'd had cancer on that side, and getting a hummingbird painted on was more fun. He said that his mother had just gone through a mastectomy the week before, so he understood my wanting to replace the pain with fun. It's gone now, of course, but for a short time I had a neat tattoo . :) Maybe you can look forward to doing something like that yourself, when you are finally feeling well again.

And in the meantime, continue to smile, bask in the love of your wonderful family, and be well.

    Hi Karen,

When I read Cynthia's comment about using aloe on your skin, I thought right away about Key West Aloe products. I ordered you a bottle of Skinmoist Body Lotion with 80% aloe plus Vitamin E. I have used some of their products and my Mom really likes them too. They have a store locally, but we've also been to their outlet store in Key West a few times. Hope this helps you stay "in the pink". Look for it on your doorstep in the next few days.

    Take care!
    Linda and Doug
