Karen's Journey

Thursday, September 28, 2006

In May, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, my last chemo date of Sept. 28 seemed so far away. But, it's over now, and I am officially in remission - for the next 5 years!!! Yeah!! After that, as long as no cancer shows up, I'll be considered cured....With all the chemo. drugs building up in my system, these last couple treatments have been especially difficult, and I'm sure that this one won't be any different. But, now it's over, and I have a few weeks off before things start happening. Towards the end of October, they have me scheduled for a visit with my Oncologist (my "traffic cop"), my radiation oncologist, a body scan, and a mammogram. My radiation will probably start around the first of November and I'll be done by mid-December. What a wonderful Christmas present that will be!! I might even have a little hair by then!

It's been quite a week for Sam too. He was in Ottawa, KS, and on the way, had breakfast in Des Moines with our good friend Roger Rhodes on Wednesday. This morning (Thursday) he was in Columbia, MO, and had breakfast with Denise Krueger Lasley's husband, Sam. My Sam always enjoys meeting up with people when he can and when the schedule allows. He'll be home tonight, and that's always good.

Before I left the hospital today, the nurse's gave me a pink & white beaded bracelet that one of them made and I got hugs from all of them. They're such a great group, doing a very difficult job.

Thank you, everyone, for your continued prayers and support.
Love,Karen

    Hi Mom,
We are glad that the chemo is over. It is great to know that you are in remission. Take the time to rest and heal. Go for walks and build up your strength before the radiation starts.
I have a lady coming over to interview me for daycare at one so I need to get vacuuming.
    Have a great week-end.
    Love you,
    Krista

    Hi Karen,
I've been thinking of you, thinking that this week would be your final chemo, and happy for you. This is a great step forward toward being yourself again! Rest and recover your strength, and I hope the radiation goes well for you.
I'm looking forward to seeing you next year at our class reunion. I think I'm supposed to be planning it !

    God Bless...

    Hi you two!

Well, you made it through the worst of it...there was never a doubt! Congrats to you both! Just shows what a positive outlook can do! You set a good example we all can learn from...how to face life's challenges and come out smiling because you overcame them!

I'll call you later this week. Take care!

This is the month to really grab life and enjoy every minute of it as you get strong again.

Enjoy the changing of the leaves and the crisp days. This is such a great time of year.

It is actually like the path you are heading through. The old leaves are fading away to prepare for the new. This is how your life has just been routed. Time to start the new, fresh one.

    Love, Enjoy and LIVE!!!
